Native Americans are an ethnic group found in North, South, and Central America made composed of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Around 5.2 million Native Americans were believed to be residing in the US in 2012.

Heavy alcohol use

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that the rate of current heavy alcohol use among Native Americans aged 12 and older was roughly 9.2%, the highest rate of any ethnic group.

About 346,000 Native Americans were reported for binge drinking in early months of 2015. 

Fetal alcohol syndrome

The majority of alcohol-related deaths per million persons occur among Native Americans. When a person consumes a lot of alcohol in a short length of time and the brain shuts down, alcohol poisoning can be fatal. 

Dual diagnosis

Native Americans had a co-occurring disorder rate of 8.8% in 2014, which was much higher than the 3.3% national average. 


Compared to other ethnic groups, Native Americans are more likely to require alcohol addiction treatment.

Native Americans sought addiction treatment in 2013, totaling 41,953. 13 186,000 Native Americans who required addiction treatment did not receive it between 2003 and 2011.
